Newcastle West success in NHS Alliance Acorn Awards

David Thorne, Newcastle West CCG Chief Executive won ‘Best Manager of a Consortia in the Acorn Awards presented at the NHS Alliance’s 14th annual conference in Manchester on 30th November.

The Newcastle Care Homes Project, run jointly by Newcastle West and neighbouring Newcastle North and East CCG, was runner up in the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) category. This project was commended as it has helped to reduce the number of unnecessary emergency admissions to hospital from nursing and residential care homes. As part of the project, GPs have worked closely with care home staff across Newcastle, reducing the number of inappropriate hospital admissions by 8.8% compared to 2009/10 and improving working relationships between NHS primary care and local care homes to provide better care for residents.

David Thorne, chief executive of Newcastle West CCG, said:

"We’re delighted to have been recognised in these awards, particularly for our work on the Newcastle Care Homes Project which is helping our patients to enjoy a better quality of life by avoiding the distress of unnecessary trips to hospital. A key part has been excellent teamwork by all those involved in their care."
